Complete Smile Restoration / Smile In A Day
When many teeth are failing or missing, a full-arch treatment plan can help rebuild how your smile works and looks, and some suitable patients may leave with provisional teeth on the day of treatment.
Prosthodontic care at West End Dental Centre is provided by our general dentist team. Our dentists are not licensed specialists in prosthodontics.
What is complete smile restoration?
Complete smile restoration is a coordinated plan for patients whose teeth are extensively worn, broken, decayed or missing across most of an arch. Rather than fixing one tooth at a time, your dentist looks at the whole mouth and plans treatment so that your bite, comfort and appearance work together.
A plan may combine several treatments, such as extractions of teeth that cannot be saved, dentures, implant-supported restorations, crowns and bridges. The mix depends entirely on your oral health, your medical history and your goals.
What "Smile In A Day" does and does not mean
"Smile In A Day" describes approaches where a temporary, or provisional, set of teeth is fitted on the same day as treatment, so you are not left without teeth while your mouth heals. Examples include an immediate denture placed right after extractions, or, in some implant cases, a provisional full-arch restoration.
It does not mean your final teeth are completed in one day. Gums and bone change as they heal, so the final restoration is usually made and fitted months later. Same-day provisional teeth are not suitable for every patient, some steps may be referred to another provider, and your dentist can only tell you which options may apply after a full assessment.
Who may consider a full-arch plan?
A complete restoration plan may be worth discussing if you have:
- Many teeth affected by advanced decay, fractures or gum disease
- Several missing teeth that make chewing difficult
- A denture that no longer fits, stays in place or feels comfortable
- Extensive older dental work that is wearing out at the same time
- Significant tooth wear that has changed the shape of your bite
These are only starting points for a conversation. Only an exam and X-rays can confirm which treatments may be appropriate for you.

How treatment is planned
Every full-arch case is different, but planning generally follows these stages:
-
Comprehensive assessment
Your dentist examines your teeth, gums, jaw joints and bite, reviews your medical history, and takes digital X-rays.
-
Discussing your options
You will talk through the options that may suit you, such as conventional dentures, implant-supported restorations or a phased approach, along with timelines and estimated costs.
-
Preparing the mouth
Teeth that cannot be saved may be removed and gum problems treated. Some surgical steps may be completed by another provider through a referral.
-
Provisional teeth
Where appropriate, temporary teeth may be fitted on the day of treatment so you can smile and eat softer foods while you heal.
-
Final restoration
After healing, your final teeth are designed, fitted and adjusted, followed by regular checkups to keep them working well.
Other ways to restore your smile
A full-arch plan is not the only route. If only some teeth need attention, replacing worn or failing dental work or a porcelain bridge may be enough. Your dentist will explain the trade-offs of each option so you can make an informed decision.
