Children's X-Rays & Imaging

Dental X-rays show what a visual exam cannot, such as cavities between teeth and adult teeth developing under the gums. For children, we take them only when there is a clinical reason.

Why might my child need X-rays?

Children's back teeth often touch tightly, so cavities can start between them where they are impossible to see during an exam. X-rays can also show how permanent teeth are forming beneath baby teeth, whether there is enough room for them, and whether a tooth has been affected by an injury or infection.

Finding a problem early can mean simpler treatment. Equally, a clear X-ray can reassure you and your dentist that nothing needs to be done.

Low dose, and only when needed

We take children's radiation exposure seriously. Our approach includes:

  • Digital X-rays, which use less radiation than older film-based systems
  • Taking X-rays only when your dentist has a clinical reason, not on a fixed schedule
  • Choosing the smallest number of images that will answer the question
  • Using the lowest exposure that still gives a clear diagnostic image
  • Asking about recent X-rays from a previous clinic, so images are not repeated unnecessarily

How often will my child need X-rays?

There is no single schedule for every child. A child with a history of cavities may need X-rays more often than a child with low risk and healthy teeth. Your dentist considers your child's age, risk and dental history, as well as when the last images were taken.

If you are ever unsure why an X-ray is being recommended, please ask. We are happy to explain what we are looking for.

What it is like for your child

  1. We explain it first

We describe the X-ray as "taking a picture of your teeth" and show your child the camera and sensor.

  2. Positioning the sensor

A small sensor is placed in the mouth, and your child gently bites to hold it.

  3. Holding still

The picture takes just a moment. Your child only needs to stay still for a second or two.

  4. Seeing the picture

Digital images appear on the screen right away, and many children enjoy seeing their teeth.

Some children have a sensitive gag reflex. Let us know, and we will take our time and try a different approach if needed.

Types of X-rays you may hear about

Bitewing X-rays show the back teeth from above and below and are mainly used to check for cavities between teeth. Periapical X-rays show a whole tooth, including the root, and may be used after an injury or when a tooth is sore. A panoramic X-ray shows all the teeth and jaws in one image and may be recommended to look at developing teeth.

Your dentist will explain which images, if any, your child needs and why. You can learn more about imaging in general on our digital X-rays page.
